After all, it’s just another song that the DJ plays at parties and it is catchy and come on, we wouldn’t get down from the stage just because the DJ suddenly played some random song that some people consider offensive!
Others might even be oblivious to what these songs indicate and dismiss the lyrics as, well, just some lyrics.
Some of us who are reading this right now, wouldn’t find anything wrong with Yo Yo Honey Singh’s praise for a woman, though they might consider it a cheap parody of Petrarchan love sonnets. So I thought, apparently Bollywood/ Punjabi songs do not fall into the “we are intellectual” category, unlike English songs. No, Honey Singh!” I was fresh out of school, and had not yet been introduced to concepts of misogyny, patriarchy, sexism and feminism. This was followed by a look of disgust and, “No. I asked one of my seniors who was DJing, to play a ‘Honey Singh song’ as she was playing only English songs. It all began with the Freshers’ Party of my college back in 2014.
